Trying to Change the World One Second at a Time

Okay... So here we are into the 2nd blog post about my 20% Time project. I have everything together kind of, (please look at my last post). I have not been struggling with ideas, but I want to change the title of my project. I now want to call it Changing the Culture of Social Media.

The app that I have in mind, will become a new form of social media, but it will be different. Traditional social media can make people very unhappy. It promote bad habits, drags people down due to life comparisons and can cause depression. I don't think that is how platforms like that should be designed. I want to be able to share my experiences to help other and make the world a better place. I know that all of this sounds extremely cliche, but this is actually how I feel and I intend for my plan to work out in some sort of positive way, even if it is not how I imagined it.

In terms of things I have actually done this week, I know my teacher talked about relating this project to a book that we would have to read for independent reading. So I have started to do some research on that. I found The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. I know my mom read this book and really liked it, but I am unsure so I also found things like The Book of Joy, Happier, The How of Happiness, The Myths of Happiness. I am not sure if I would rather read a book about the effects of social media. Anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

Next on my 20% Time To-Do List is to have a meeting with my partner to make sure we are on the same page about everything. I kind of feel like I am more interested in the project than she is. I don't want her to decide like 1 month in that she hates it and I want her to feel like she can contribute her ideas to the project as well. I am excited for this project to teach me lessons about partner/group work and how to be an effective communicator without being bossy. After I have that meeting with her, I need to start figuring out how to code. I feel like that will definitely be the most time consuming part of the project because I am technologically challenged. That is part of the reason why I decided to include the app portion as a part of my project. I think that it will really challenge me to step outside of my comfort zone and learn a new skill in the process. We will see how this next week goes and the progress I make, but I am not expecting it to be that much.
